Integration policy

What does immigration mean for the future of the European Union?

Migration is the only reason why the EU’s population grew in the last decade. Since 2011, we have grown by eight million people, and all of this growth is due to migration. Without it, the total population of the 27 members of the EU would have fallen.

This is the introduction to the second of two policy briefs from the FUME Project.

The Nordic research centre in Stockholm, Nordregio, is a part of the project, and the major study, commissioned by the European Commission, has published research articles and reports on migration to and from a number of European urban centres, such as Copenhagen and Rome, since 2020. The project has also been the source of several projections of possible scenarios for the future movement of migrants in Europe.
